  • I'm nervous about starting therapy, is that normal?
I totally understand that therapy can feel a bit vulnerable and new, and it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous about it. Opening up to someone you don’t know can be intimidating, and you might worry it will be awkward or uncomfortable. Those feelings can be really overwhelming! Just remember, taking the step to go to therapy, even with those jitters, is a brave move. By reading this, you’re already on the right path! Therapy is a safe space where you can truly be your authentic self, nerves and all! I want to make sure we create a comfortable environment for you, no matter how you’re feeling. If you’d like to chat about any concerns or questions you have, I’d love to talk during a free consultation. I’m here for you!
  • How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
I know how important it is to find a therapist who understands you and with whom you connect! Please take the time to read through my website. If you feel that I may be a good fit for you based on what you read, please book a consultation or email me. During the free consultation, you can ask questions about my approach or any other questions you may have. You will also be able to share what's going on for you, and we can decide together if we are a good fit. You can also share your interests. I really appreciate openness and genuine connection with my clients.
  • How do I know if virtual therapy is right for me?
Virtual therapy can be just as helpful as face-to-face sessions for people dealing with trauma and anxiety. All you usually need for virtual appointments is a stable internet connection and a quiet, private place to talk. If I ever think you might benefit from more intensive care or in-person support, I will let you know right away.
  • How will we meet for virtual sessions?
We will meet via Zoom (HIPPA-compliant). I will send you a link to use for all of our sessions from your computer or by downloading the free app (available on Apple and Google Play).
  • How often do we meet?
In mental health counselling, we usually start meeting weekly. After five sessions, we will reassess together how you want to move forward, and sessions can be spaced out to biweekly or monthly. Nutritional counselling sessions typically occur monthly, but after reviewing progress, they may be reduced to once every three months or even a year. Coaching sessions can be conducted as a one-time meeting or may follow a similar frequency as therapy sessions, depending on your individual needs.
  • What will our first session be like?
In our first few sessions, we'll focus on getting to know each other, understanding why you're seeking help, and building up your coping skills. We’ll discuss what you hope to achieve in therapy and devise a plan to get started. Over the next couple of months, we will work on reducing feelings of anxiety and stress from difficult experiences by using various treatment approaches that are selected specifically for you.
  • Do you have a sliding scale?
As a Latin-american queer immigrant in Canada, I am committed to anti-oppression and inclusivity, and accessibility. I have a few spots dedicated to a sliding scale structure. Please get in touch with me, and we can discuss your case.
  • Do you work with teens or kids?
No, I do not work with children and typically only work with adults over 21.
  • Are my sessions private?
Your privacy is not only protected by law, it is also a priority of mine. I cannot and will not share treatment information or acknowledge a relationship of any kind between us without your written consent. There are a few exceptions to this such as instances of your and others’ safety and the abuse of children or elders as well as rare legal situations where I may be required to share your information with appropriate authorities.
  • Where are you located?
I currently reside in Toronto, however I am from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
  • How do I contact you?
The first step is to book a free consultation Zoom call. Please book here: https://authenticselfcounselling.janeapp.com/ In this call, I’ll ask you some questions so you can get a feel for how I work. We’ll decide if I’m the best fit for you, and if not, I’ll give you some ideas of what some good options might be. If we decide to work together, we’ll book another session. Before our first session, you’ll have some paperwork to review and fill out.
